WWPass BlackBook and Personal Secure Storage
WWPass BlackBook and Personal Secure Storage Editor's Review
With time, PC security is turning out to be more complex and tedious matter. You can no longer rely on security apps but ensuring privacy of data is also important. While many password manager apps offer secure data encryption options, losing the master password can land you into trouble. Encrypted cloud storage is not fully secure owing to spurt in attacking activities. However, you may try out WWPass BlackBook and Personal Secure Storage which comes for free.
The app runs on PCs with Windows 7 and later versions and there are Mac and Linux compatible editions too. It requires use of android device for authentication needs. Buying a device named Passkey is also possible for this. The app installs as a driver which means a reboot is necessary to complete installation. Downloading its Mobile PassKey app is required. Bluetooth should be enabled both on the PC and mobile device. After install, you need to set up passkey and access the dashboard.
It is possible to buy a PassKeyKeySet which comprises of 3 USB devices. One of them is Passkey while two others are service keys. The Passkey needs to be plugged in a USB port in the PC for authentication. The service keys are meant for account management and task like deactivating lost passkey and connecting fresh passkey to account. The keys remain in your custody which means hassles like contacting tech support and waiting for replacement is not there. WWPass does not access your data and pass code.
WWPass is comprised of 2 major components- PSS and BlackBook. The latter is a password manager and the former is secure storage option. The unique Distributed Data System of WWPass ensures your encrypted data is stored on multiple servers. Even if a attacking exploit can retrieve data from one server will not result in data theft. With this app, two-factor authentication is a must. For accessing your account, it is necessary to use both PassKey and master access code. The free edition relies on an Android app for mobile passkey. The desktop app can be paired with mobile app through Bluetooth.
With PassKey enabled, you need to install BlackBook password manager plug-in for Chrome or Firefox. After that, you can log in BlackBook account using master pass code and mobile device. When it comes to prowess as a password manager, BlackBook is rather basic. It captures credentials when you log into a website for the first time. Upon revisiting the site, the app offers to fill in data. BlackBook may be inadequate for using sites with two-part login though.
It is possible to organize and categorize captured logins in the app’s Manage Credentials page. Adding new category however is not allowed. There is a password generator tab. BlackBook lacks the option to log off by default after a certain amount of time, a common feature found in many password manager apps. You need to either remove the passkey or take mobile device out of Bluetooth range.
The app lets you export contents to CSV format. Importing from same format is possible. Another area where it lags behind other rival apps is lack of ability to fill Web forms automatically. Sharing credentials securely is not possible.
Apart from BlackBook Password manager, you get 600MB storage after installing WWPass. Using the cloud storage is simple and DropBox and Google Drive users should not have any trouble. Uploading and downloading files work smoothly and drag and drop is also supported. You can delete the original file post uploading. However, 600 MB data storage seems too measly by present standards and you can use it for storing documents securely in cloud rather than media content.
• Compulsory two factor authentication.
• Free version offers good level of safety.
• Distributed Data System.
• Tedious setup may baffle beginners.
• Password manager is not advanced.
• No automatic web-form fill up.
WWPass BlackBook and Personal Secure Storage come with many unique security features. The DDS splits user data into multiple servers, making them immune to attacks literally. Android device authentication is simple when you do not want to pay. Even for the paid package, 3 device set simplifies account management. However, the password manager module is rather rudimentary. It cannot fill up web forms. Categorizing captured logins is possible but you cannot create a new category, which is limiting. The lack of time based lock off facility is another downer. The setup can turn out to be rather tedious for average PC users.
