Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete 2013 Editor's Review
The concept of computer security has assumed new proportions with changing times and usage patterns. Gone are those times when a standard free antivirus app would be adequate for safeguarding your desktop or laptop from malware invasion. Nowadays, users have to think several times before picking even a costly internet security suite, such is the prowess of hackers and malware apps lurking online. The abundance of Security software has made the situation even more complex. If you want a capable PC security suite that is low on system resources and offers more features than just malware protection, try Webroot's SecureAnywhere Complete. It includes antivirus protection, firewall, anti phishing components and offer goodies like online file backup and system clean up. In fact, its malware protection also covers your android devices.
The price may seem a little on higher side but when you consider the app protects not only PCs but 5 devices including those running Mac OS and Android, it emerges as a value for money offering. Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete comes with an intuitive installer which has a small footprint. You need not reboot the system post installation. The app uses cloud based protection for most of its services. As expected, post installation the app initiates a system scan automatically.
The app is Windows 8 compatible but the interface design is not much inspired by Metro UI of the new Microsoft OS. The interface with its 6 tabs has a business like look which is easy to operate. The main application window displays the remaining subscription days and scan activity. You get a password manager with the complete edition and 25 GB of web based storage.
For malware detection, Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete relies mostly on behavior analysis though signatures are also deployed to an extent. In case the suite detects an app to be risky or rogue, users get a prompt for selecting suitable actions. For unknown programs, this app depends on a multi-layer defense technology called Infrared. However, in real life scenario, this app scores decently in malware detection and gets outperformed by several rivals.
While malware protection of the app lies in acceptable range it does falter in other areas. The firewall actually requires Windows firewall to be enabled to work. It means the firewall is effective only for blocking outbound traffic and cannot be much effective against inbound attacks and stealth intrusion attempts. Another area where the app loses out to other PC security suites is that it does not offer any parental control.
One big advantage of using Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete is minimal impact on PC performance and speed. Even for long scans it does not tax the CPU much. There are shields for rootkit installation, removal of threats at download level etc. The app also looks for risks present in connected and removable devices constantly. It is quite good that the app also comes with an offline shield as web based connection is necessary to get most of the protection. While you can customize protection level offered by the app, the default settings are suitable for most users.
You get a web console to upload and manage data for online backup. It is also used for managing multiple registered devices. This online console also provides information on malicious files caught on PCS and devices protected by Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete. You can also initiate tasks like locking the system and optimizing the device from the console. To ensure your sensitive data is securely erased, you can use the app’s bundled Secure Erase utility.
Positive Points:
- Small footprint, low on system resources.
- Decent malware detection and cleanup.
- Default settings suitable for majority of users.
- Offers online backup and system cleanup tools.
Negative Points:
- Rival apps offer better malware detection and coverage.
- No parental control.
Conclusion:
Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete is a decently performing PC security suite that will appeal to a majority of users. It has got many positives, including low system requirement, bundled utility tools and superb ease of use. The malware protection is decent though not the category best. Inclusion of cloud backup and coverage of 5 devices running diverse OS makes it suitable for different types of users as well. However, demanding users will grudge about lack of any parental control and given the fact it is a fully fledged commercial security suite the grievance is justified. The firewall protection offered by this app may also be less than ideal for network users. These two glitches aside, the app performs really well and offers great value for money.
