Voodoo Shield Editor's Review
When you own and use a Windows based PC, using a security application becomes absolutely necessary. However, you will be hard pressed to find an anti-virus solution that can be called perfect! Even top notch and expensive antivirus applications come with some caveat or other. While some such applications falter at catching rootkits, others may be less effective in detecting false positives. It makes sense therefore to use an additional security application that will catch rogue applications and malware skipped by your regular anti virius. One such example is VoodooShield.
VoodooShield does not take much time to be installed as it is. It runs on computers with Windows XP and later versions. The 14 day trial period is there but the application nags for licensing quite often in that period.
After installation is over, VoodooShield requires a reboot. Then, it shows a couple of explanatory screens. It stays in training mode when users do not access web and notes and white lists programs. If it blocks a program by mistake, you can whitelist it. After training mode gets over, the application switches to SMART mode. When you launch a browser or email client, it gets into activity. Then it will thwart any program that is not white listed. One nice thing is that VoodooShield offers USB based threat detection and prevention. It does not hog system resources much.
To cope with malicious files downloaded by mistake by users, VoodooShield's SMART mode covers user-specific folders including Downloads and Documents. One drawback of the applications approach to malware protection is that it may skip existing malwares in a system. The company says it is not a replacement of a standalone antivirus but works as a complementary tool or add-on. It supports most free and commercial antivirus applications.
VoodooShield recommends you scan a suspected file or program with VirusTotal, an online malware scanning resource before white listing it. VoodooShield does a nice job of thwarting malware download and execution at folder level. The whitelist management is done through a web based console. However, by default it may deny Windows update files download and putting the application in training mode for some time is the only way to let the updates run.
Advanced users may choose to tweak VoodooShield's settings but the default choices are optimal for most users. You can choose not to blacklist specific types of programs. To prevent loopholes to be exploited by malware, keep the program in on mode at all times. The company offers email based support for customers. There is an online FAQ section as well.
- Training and Smart mode for application management.
- USB detection feature.
- Supports scan with VirusTotal.
- Low on system resources.
- Can skip existing malware in a system.
- Beginners can really mess up the things in the settings panel.
VoodooShield is a decent add-on for your existing Windows antivirus and offers an added layer of protection at low cost. The training and smart modes are intuitive and takes out complications involved in program white listing and blacklisting. Apart from malware blocking it also offers option to scan suspected files through online portal. You would do better by accepting default settings of the application to get optimal protection. The only flaw of its working mechanism is that it may skip existing malware in a PC.
