VirtualDub Editor's Review

Virtual dub is both a video editing software (although a bare bones one) and a video capture tool, and although the entire project is open source and intended to be bare bones, it has a great amount of functionality in both the roles it fills. This will mean it may be hard for users who are used to seeing very graphical interfaces with their software, but once you get used to it, you will find that virtual dub is a very useful program for both of its two functions.

Video Capture:
If you want to use Virtual Dub as a way to maximise the potential of your capture device or simply so you can record and edit in the same program, then it does make a great choice in software. To do so, first of all open Virtual Dub, which will bring you to the main part of the software, from here, click file in the top right of the window, which will bring down a drop down menu, on this drop down menu, click enter capture AVI. This will take you into capture mode (rather obviously)

Capture mode has a variety of features, you may want to explore them all if you are looking at making top notch video content, or have very specific needs, but there are a few core ones that you should know, first of all, clicking device at the top of the window will bring up your list of available recording devices, use this to pick what device you want to record of. Once you have picked this, click audio, and pick the corresponding audio device (usually the same one) or if you'd like to record a silent video click no audio.
Once you have decided on all of the options you'd like to apply to your recording, press capture and start capturing your video. This will make the sidebar start displaying statistics about your capture. When you have finished recording, press stop capture, and you now have a high quality .AVI file compatible with the editing part of virtual dub!

Video editing:
Virtual dub is also (and primarily) a way of editing AVI video files in a very bare bones way and not requiring expensive or high end software to do the exact same tasks by taking out a lot of the steps in between the editing. To start editing a video clip (make sure it is an avi) click file, and then open AVI. Once you have opened your AVI, you are free to edit it with the variety of tools in virtual dub, such as filters and splitting.

Overall Virtual Dub is an incredible piece of video editing software that manages to have all the features and capabilities of high end editing software while being completely free and lightweight. Anyone who ever needs to edit videos should definitely try Virtual Dub over whatever you are using now, as although it is incredibly simple, the number of features it contains combined with the raw efficiency of the program makes Virtual dub an excellent choice in download.
