Typing invaders is a free ware typing game, which (in short) essentially takes the concept from the game space invaders, and applies it to a fun typing improving game. It does this by taking all the core gameplay elements of space invaders, and then making you control the game with a fun typing tutorial control system. The idea being, since it uses changing parts of the keyboard, while you must keep your eyes on the game screen, you must also remember where your keys on your keyboard are, so the game improves your knowledge of where the keys are on the keyboard, and therefore you ability to type.

The gameplay of typing invaders is very similar to the classic arcade title space invaders. The only clear differences come from the fact that there is an on screen keyboard below the game screen, which can be used for visual assistance for working out where the specific keys are. Also, the controls of the game are completely different, to help it be a typing tool instead of just a game, and since the controls change every time you make a move, the core gameplay is affected because you can not make multiple successive moves.

The controls of the game are different for each level, the game will give you a row of the keyboard to use for each level, and then three random (separate) keys from that row will be assigned to move left, move right and fire (upwards). Once you make one of these moves, the three keys assigned to these moves will change, and therefore to make multiple moves of the same type you will need to press separate keys. This makes the game a very interesting experience, as you have to move quickly across your keyboard, and both reactions and skill are needed for quick moves.

The difficulty of this game is an interesting one to discuss, as it is entirely based on your typing skill, as well as your knowledge of the keyboard. The better you can remember where the keys are on your keyboard, the easier you will find it to carry out your actions, and therefore the easier you will find the game. This however, is only half the difficulty. In addition to this, there is also the element of actually paying space invaders, and knowing when to fire, and when to dodge incoming attacks.

Overall typing invaders is a really interesting variant of the space invaders concept which can help you to learn how to type better. The only real two downsides, are firstly the way the game is presentation of the game, being very ascii styled and low tech. If you can ignore this, the second problem is just how simplistic the gameplay is. Although space invaders wasa classic game of its time, in modern days it no longer really stands up as a game of its own.
