Tunes is a free ware game with a fairly redundant title, as the game is needless to say a game in the rhythm or music genre. The general concept of tunes is very similar to that of many other popular rhythm games in the same market as it, such as the guitar hero games, the rock band series, frets on fire or super crazy guitar maniac deluxe. If none of those game names mean anything to you, the general idea of tunes is that there are musical notes falling down the screen, and you must collect them to play along with the music.

The gameplay of tunes is as previously mentioned most comparable to guitar hero, albeit controlled with the mouse. In tunes, coloured blocks will scroll down from the bottom of the screen, in tune with a music track which plays, in a way which makes every block line up with a key sound in the music. There is a marker which looks like a mask on the screen which is controlled by your mouse, and the idea is to get the mask to line up to the lane the blocks are on, which will make the note “play” and give you points.

This might seem slightly easy perhaps, but as you progress through the game (there is an in game tutorial level) more elements are added into the game. For instance, there are extra “beats” in the music which you must click, in tune with the general beat of the music, to add more challenge to the game. There are also sustained “hold” notes where you must hold the mouse on the correct lane for the entire length of the note, and you will be rewarded with points which correspond to how long you hold down the note.

The control system of the game is incredibly intuitive, being controlled entirely with the mouse. To anyone with a sense of rhythm the game will control incredibly well, as you just have to simply move the mouse to the rhythm of the song, and you simply have to be able to keep yourself moving to the beat. In addition to this, the way the clicking works, and the way in which the menu's, and the level selection work make a very smooth and intuitive game, with a decent level of graphics.

The theme of tunes is also incredibly good, and perhaps one of the most important selling features of the game, as although the title would suggest it is entirely based upon music with perhaps no additional theme of anything, but the game actually has a strong aztec theme, which doesn't go well with the music, but is very good to look at in its own right. Overall, tunes is an incredibly good game with a deep theme, and if you are a fan of music or rhythm games, you'll find it to be an incredible experience, if you're not a music fan, maybe not so much but otherwise definitely give it a download.
