Software Listing: Versioninfo

The Version Information Editor allows the easy creation of resource files containing a single VERSIONINFO resource statement. Such statements, when compiled by a resource file compiler, enable version information to be embedded in application, DLL and other types of file recognised by Windows.

The RCStamp application was developed to be a flexible command line tool to modify the FILEVERSION entries in a .rc Resource script.

File Version numbers in Windows consist of four positions with 16 bits each, e.g. 6.0.2600.0 is the version of my iexplore.exe. Typically you use the first two positions as "major.minor" version, based on the features of the module, the third position for an incremental build count, and the fourth for special builds. (You already knew all this, didn't you?)

RCStamp grew out of the necessity to manage a rather complex versioning scheme on a dozen of binaries.

InfoTag Magic is a Windows shell infotip extension that displays the title, artist, album, year, bit rate, duration and other information stored in the tag fields of MP3, WMA, Monkey's Audio and Ogg Vorbis files in a tooltip window when mouse pointer is hovered over a file in Windows Explorer. After instalation of this Add-in just run the Visual Studio and create the new project for Visual C++ 'Win32 Project' or open an existing. In Add-in Manager of Tools menu check this add-in to turn on. In the context menu of the Solution Explorer select Add Version Information... item. This add to your project or projects (it depends of the selection item in the Solution Explorer) a special file - VersionInfo.
