The gradient function in Matlab allows you to compute the slope of a curve along its entire length. But if your curve is a noisy one, then gradient will also be noisy. In this event one might desire to fit a moderately low order polynomial regression model in a sliding window, then differentiate that model. (Like a Savitzky-Golay filter.) All of this can be done efficiently in Matlab using filter. Note that this tool does not constrain the length of the support to be even or odd. Also, this tool uses pinv to generate the filter coefficients - a more stable and accurate methodology than does the sgolay tool on the file exchange.

Passing & Bablok described this procedure in the 1983. This procedure is ideal if you want to compare 2 different methods (instrument) which measure the same chemical analyte in the same sample. Classical linear regression method assume that variables X and Y are normal distributed and with a measurement error costant over the range of concentrations. However, in method comparison studies we generally find that the distribution of measurements is not normal and that variance of errors is not costant. Passing & Bablok regression does not require specific assumptions regarding the distributions of the expected values or the error terms.

Gas absorption is a very ubiquitous unit operation in any chemical plant. It has in common with liquid-liquid extraction that there are two carrier streams and one solute to be partioned between them. Here, we use the McCabe and Thiele graphical method to study the separation of acetone from air. In fact, we use water to absorb acetone from air. The sliders allow the user to select the initial amount of acetone in air and the percent recovery of acetone (i.e. how much acetone will be extracted from air using water). The minimum L/G ratio is determined and we select for the operating line's slope a ratio L/G=1.
