Software Listing: Mobile Robots
This small set of MATLAB m-scripts can be used to learn about camera controlled mobile robots and linear estimation. The central simulation is robsim, a GUI based m-script which gives access to all available elements of the simulation environment. The simulation robsim has been written to assist students of robotics and mechatronics degrees in developing algorithms for the control of mobile robots based on visual feedback from a ceiling mounted camera. The simulation provides a virtual environment, which closely resembles the real environment of the laboratory. Replacing the live stream of images from the camera by simulated images, the students can develop their robot control algorithms off-line, without the need for access to the actual hardware such as the camera and/or other laboratory equipment.

Webots is a development environment used to model, program and simulate mobile robots. With Webots the user can design complex robotic setups, with one or several, similar or different robots, in a shared environment. The properties of each object, such as shape, color, texture, mass, friction, etc., are chosen by the user. A large choice of simulated sensors and actuators is available to equip each robot. The robot controllers can be programmed with the built-in IDE or with third party development environments. The robot behavior can be tested in physically realistic worlds. The controller programs can optionally be transferred to commercially available real robots.

This project contains software for the quantitative analysis of different aspects of robotic exploration (i.e., mobile robots that autonomously explore initially unknown environments).
More specifically, first, we modified the exploration package (developed by researchers at Bosch Research and Technology Center in Palo Alto, CA), by adding an exploration strategy, namely MCDM, and by introducing the possibility to change perception and decision timing, i.e., event-based or frequency-based perception/decision. Second, we developed a package that collects performance metrics during the exploration process.
