They can start as applications or applets. While executed as an applet, it will not be able to save the results due to Java's security reasons and the "data" subprogram will not function properly. Firmview creates an annotated jpg/png file from any file for easy and simple visual inspection of the binary content. Great for finding approximate location of data, text and code segments within large files.

As the name suggest it was made in order to make a preliminary visual inspection of large firmware files with embedded boot-loaders, code and filesystems.

It is written in Perl and based on the ImageMagick library.
