The Shoebox utilities are a set of command line utilities designed to enhance the power of SIL's Shoebox and Toolbox applications by providing non-trivial generic tools that work with Shoebox files.

Shoebox is a flat file database program with excellent script and language capabilities. Toolbox has taken over from the development of Shoebox. It supports Unicode and other new features.

Since much of the basic file format is the same between Shoebox and Toolbox, with Toolbox being a superset of Shoebox, the Shoebox utilities will work quite happily with Toolbox files. Therefore, wherever Shoebox is mentioned in this documentation, the reader should also read Toolbox, unless Toolbox is explicitly mentioned in contrast to Shoebox.

Monitors and displays both CPU load and throttling of Intel chips ThrottleWatch is a utility for detecting and reporting the CPU throttling activity in Pentium 4, Xeon, and Pentium M processors. The amount of heat a CPU produces varies according to the processing load. In situations of high sustained load (such as performance benchmarks, etc...), a CPU may produce more heat than the cooling mechanism is capable of removing, and reach a high enough internal temperature to trigger throttling. ThrottleWatch monitors and graphically displays both the CPU load and any throttling that occurs. When ThrottleWatch is minimized, an icon is added to the system tray area of the Taskbar.

Tregex is a tool for matching patterns in trees, based on tree relationships and regular expression matches on nodes (the name is short for "tree regular expressions").

It contains essentially the same functionality as TGrep2 (which had a superset of the functionality of the original tgrep), plus several extremely useful relations for natural language trees, for example "A is the lexical head of B", and "A and B share a (hand-specified) variable substring" (useful for finding nodes coindexed with each other).

Because it does not create preprocessed indexed corpus files, it is however somewhat slower than TGrep2 when searching over large treebanks.

Apache Compress Antlib is a library designed for compression and archiving. Using Apache Commons Compress this Antlib supports gzip and bzip2 compression and ar, cpio, tar and zip archives.

The current code base is based on the 1.1 release of Commons Compress but it is expected that this Antlib follows Commons Compress' development and will add new compression or archiving formats as they are provided by the underlying library.

The gzip and bzip2 tasks and resources are similar to the corresponding tasks and types in Ant's core and mainly just use a different code base for the implementation of the formats.

MMD is a superset of the Markdown syntax, originally created by John Gruber. It adds multiple syntax features (tables, footnotes, and citations, to name a few), in addition to the various output formats listed above (Markdown only creates HTML). Additionally, it builds in “smart” typography for various languages (proper left- and right-sided quotes, for example).
