In 2007 Nathan Fa'avae was tired of his mates saying there were not enough women interested in Adventure Racing. He believed that the sport had a much wider appeal but the traditional team format of 3-males and 1-female was not an easy way for women to participate. Ridiculed for the idea, he launched the Spring Challenge in Hanmer Springs with 327-women entering - making it the highest participated adventure race in NZ at the time.
