The Club had a humble beginning in 1958 when a few enthusiasts decided to form a rugby club in the fast growing area to the east of Melbourne, and appropriately named it the Eastern Suburbs RUFC. They gathered together a group of young players, the nucleus being from the Box Hill Boys High School who, together with several older players then granted dispensation, was entered in the 1959 Victorian Rugby Union Colts (Under 19) competition.

Great names from the Club who have been State representatives have included Patsy McGoldrick, Norm Ridgeway and Ron Saunders. Patsy went on to coach the Australian Schoolboys side to an undefeated tour of New Zealand, a tough ask at any time.
