Software Listing: City Distance

This function will compute the great circle distance between two points on a sphere of uniform radius using the Vincenty formula. At minimum, four inputs are required: lat1, long1, lat2, long2. Optionally, a fifth parameter (r) can be specified. If this parameter isn't specified it's assumed to be the mean radius of the earth in km. INPUTS: phi_s = latitude of the standpoint (base) lambda_s = longitude of the standpoint (base) phi_f = latitude of the forepoint (destination) lambda_f = longitude of the forepoint (destination) r = radius of the sphere [units determine units of d] OUTPUT: d = great circle distance from standpoint to forepoint Note that the Vincenty equation requires the latitude and longitude to be specified in radians.

DISTMATLATLON Computes distance matrix between list of coords in X and Y D = DISTMATLATLON(X,Y) for matrices X and Y, with columns [Lat Lon], returns the distance matrix where the (i,j)th entry is the distance between the i'th and j'th row of X and Y respectively. X and Y must have columns in the form of [Lat Lon], but can be different in number of rows. [D,XI,YI]=DISTMATLATLON(X,Y,varargin) gives the indices of the sorted values of matrix D, depending on the inputs of varargin. (The n'th row of XI is the ordering of distance to each member of Y in relationship to X(n); similarly for YI.

The objective of this program is to be able to measure distance from an object to the web cam you are using, this measure is given in centimeters(cm). The interface is very simple, it consists of an axes space that lets you visualize what the cam is seeing, the program will draw a rectangle in the outline of the object that it's focusing. You'll be able to see that there also are 2 buttons, one that says 'Start Cam', and the second one 'Distance'. To make the program work you'll need objects that are very white, in my case I used the screen of an ipod touch, I also tried with a paper ball, and a white ruler, but I'm sure that any white object should work as long as you have the right brightness in the room.
