TinyWall Editor's Review

Nowadays, it is quite hard to locate a computer user who does not need to access the web. While you browse the web for any need, it is imperative that you use security applications to safeguard your computer from various online threats. The threats are no longer limited only to malware that can be handled by an antivirus solution. To thwart stealth attacks and intrusion attempts of malicious hackers, you have to use firewall protection in your computer. Windows XP onwards, every version of Windows does come with an integrated firewall component. With each OS release, it has been beefed up by Microsoft. Still, for security conscious users Windows firewall may not seem suitable. If you want to fortify the safety level provided by Windows firewall but do not want to pay for that, there is a solution. You can try TinyWall, an add-on to existing Windows firewall that comes for free.

Installing TinyWall is a simple process and it gets finished in less than a minute. The app can be installed on PCs with Windows Vista and later editions. You need to have Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 installed in the PC as well.

TinyWall has a small footprint and will not hog system resources. In fact, the app does not even have a conventional UI. The software sits silently in the system tray and when you right click on it, the options and setting are displayed. The author of the software, KárolyPados says it is designed to make Windows Firewall safer and more user-friendly.

TinyWall may be small in footprint but its effectiveness should not be doubted. The app succeeds in stealthing system ports and they become literally invisible to outside attacks. It is also good for malware attack prevention. The nice thing is that its main processes cannot be ended using Windows Task manager. Even when the app is set to be disabled through MSConfig, it automatically reactivates the processes on rebooting. You get password protection to prevent anyone changing application settings.

TinyWall allows you to add programs to its exceptions list so that those apps are not stopped from accessing the web. In fact, it adds some web browsers and known apps to the exception list by default. This means it will not display annoying pop-ups every now and then like some of the commercial firewall apps. It is actually prudent since a majority of computer user is not technically equipped to respond to incessant pop-ups thrown by typical firewall apps. In most cases, they either allow or block all applications from accessing the web. TinyWall also comes with a useful auto learn mode.

The app shows a list of open ports and active connections, for advanced users. Nowadays, several firewalls come with Host Intrusion Prevention System or similar features that thwart attacks trying to exploit app and system vulnerabilities. TinyWall does not have such features integrated. However, the app still manages to block several attempts to manipulate trusted programs.

You will find many rival firewall apps with bundled features and components. For instance, Comodo firewall has phishing protection and sandboxing tool. You get a secure banking mode with Online Armor.  The ZoneAlarm Free Firewall 2013 is truck loaded with features like phishing protection and online backup etc. TinyWall lacks the bells and whistles but it does the job of safeguarding your PC quite well.

Positive Points:
 -  Port stealth’ features works pretty well.
 -  No annoying popups.
 -  Auto-learn mode helps a lot.
 -  Freeware and has a minimalistic users interface.
 -  Application self-defense works flawlessly.

Negative Points:
 -  Lacks support for Windows XP.
 -  HIPS is not present.
 -  No bundled add-ons.

TinyWall is a small, nifty firewall that can bolster the protection provided by Windows Firewall. It supports most Windows versions, and has a small footprint. While it lacks the additional features offered by its competitors including Comodo and Online Armor, you can rely on the app for port stealthing and most of stealth attacks. You do not need to spend anything for the fortified security as it is. The only sore point is the lack of support for Windows XP. However, given the fact Microsoft has discontinued support for the dated OS and the world is upgrading to newer OS versions, this can possibly be overlooked.

TinyWall Publisher's Description

TinyWall includes a combination of features that sets it apart from both commercial and freeware firewalls. TinyWall does not display popups that &urge users to allow&. In fact, it will not notify you of any blocked action. Rather than displaying popups, TinyWall allows users to whitelist or unblock programs via various methods. For example, you can just initiate whitelisting by a hotkey, and then click on a window that you want to allow. Or, you can select an application from the list of running processes. (Of course, the traditional way of selecting an executable also works.) This approach avoids popups but still keeps the firewall very easy to use. It will also limit the list of unblocked programs to those that the user really needs, which is optimal from a security standpoint. TinyWall gives Windows Firewall a sane and secure configuration and presents you with a simple interface where you can easily define what has network access and what not, while preventing other programs from modifying or overwriting your firewall settings.
