SyncMate Editor's Review
Just like windows users, Macintosh users also need to sync their data with myriads of other devices and other Macs. It is possible to use Apple’s much touted iCloud to sync a Mac with other iOS based devices but that may not fit everyone’s bill. There are Mac owners who do not use iPhone or iPad. They may need to sync their MacBook or iMac with an Android device, external HDD or maybe a Sony PSP. To cater to needs of such Mac users, Eltima Software has made an app named SyncMate. It is a versatile and intuitive sync app for Macintosh users. There is a free version and two other paid versions, namely Expert and Plus editions.
The app syncs seamlessly with a wide range of devices including Nokia phones, Sony PSP, Android devices, and external HDDs. Supported cloud services include iCloud, Dropbox and Google accounts. It can be used to sync variety of data like Safari Bookmarks, reminders, contacts, folders and Calendar events etc. The Plus edition lacks syncing capability with iOS devices though. The software can be installed in Macs with OS X 10.8 and subsequent versions.
The app does not hog much resource and does not tax the CPU either. Installing the app on a Mac takes only a few seconds, to be precise. SyncMate has a sleek and uncluttered UI that gels with default look of OS X 10. In the upper panel, you can access remote accounts and devices. The left sidebar of the UI has plug-ins. One glitch is while you use such plug-ins, deselecting and selecting plenty of items is required. However, it will not be too hard for people who want to sync a few devices and accounts with their Mac.
SyncMate is meant for keeping the data stored on a Mac in sync with several online accounts and devices. Connecting and syncing data with other Mac laptops and iMacs is simple. The credit however goes to Bonjour, Apple’s zero-configuration networking support. For selecting more Macs in a network, users can use a drop-down menu. Of course, using the old school way of inputting DNS name and IP address of a remote Mac is also possible. The sync works in three ways- reciprocally, from the other Mac to your Mac and vice versa. The transfer is quite fast.
To sync existing media files the app offers a plug-in named Pictures, Videos & Music. It also lets you convert various types of music files and videos before syncing starts. Syncing folders with media content also runs well. The syncing may stall if you set a wrong configuration but rectifying the issue and an app restart is required to set the things right. One irk is that during a sync, a status window pops up and you cannot access other features of the software.
While syncing with Windows based computers is different you are unlikely to face many hassles. Syncing Safari bookmarks with Google Chrome or IE is not tedious. However, with Firefox it does not sync that easily. Syncing with Dropbox also goes well as long as you deal with files and folders. If you choose calendar events, contacts and Safari bookmarks SyncMate will not actually sync. Instead, it will create backup. This happens when you try to sync data with mounted device and Dropbox.
Syncing with Android device is quite easy with SyncMate. It will help if you use wifi to establish the link. The app also uses SD card of such phones as a mounted disk, giving users access to data stored in it. Connecting with USB can be a hit or miss thing though. Connecting the app with online services like Google is a smooth affair.
SyncMate comes with a ‘Real-Time’ syncing feature. It allows you to sync contents of selected folders in real time. As you place a new file in source folder, it gets copied to the destination folder in other computer or cloud service.
Positive Points:
• Fast setup, sleek UI.
• Moderate resource consumption.
• Syncs well with Macs, Windows and Android devices.
• Real time syncing works well.
Negative Points:
• During Sync, users cannot access app features.
• Some usability irks while syncing to Dropbox.
Conclusion:
Overall, SyncMate comes across as a feature rich and versatile syncing solution for Mac owners who also own other devices, notably those not running iOS. You will be hard pressed to find another Mac data syncing application that offers support for so many non Apple devices and computers! From PSP to Android devices, it covers nearly all popular devices. Using the app is simple though configuring options for various sync jobs can be a tad hard to understand at the beginning. As expected, syncing data between two Macs is the easiest to do using the app. The add-ons like syncing support for Android phone, access to SD card of the device and real time syncing make the software a winner. There are some occasional hitches you may come across especially when dealing with third party software and devices. However, the advantages offered by this syncing app outweigh the small hiccups in the end.
