Startup Inspector for Windows
Startup Inspector for Windows Editor's Review
It doesn’t matter how new or how old your computer or laptop may be, no doubt you will experience a slow down at some point. There is always the possibility that this could be put down to malicious software infecting your system, such as viruses or spyware, but for those with effective anti-virus software installed, it’s more than likely that applications running at start up without permission is causing a slowdown. Most people aren’t even aware of how many applications automatically open when you log in, and disabling these is a great way in order to boost system performance. Start up Inspector should allow users to carry this out, quickly and easily without any other background knowledge.
From my first impression, it appears that start up Inspector is aimed more at the slightly advanced users, as opposed to basic home level users, as it’s a lot more complex than a lot of other start-up managers. The left hand side of the application houses different categories, and items that launch themselves automatically are placed into these. For advanced users, this may prove useful, however most people wouldn’t find a use for this.
To list all applications running at start up, I selected All Start up Items at the top of the window. This then displayed to me in a detailed format exactly what is launching in the background each time I log on, as well as its file location and further technical information.
Selecting an entry shows more information about it at the bottom half of the window, including its start up location, memory usage, peak memory usage, and any comments on it.
Each entry has its own tick box, and deselecting it will tell Start up Inspector to remove it from start up. This was a simple process, and once finished, I clicked the Apply button at the top to make the changes. The process as a whole is a simple one, if you have the knowledge to understand it.
Start up Inspector is freeware, which is great. However, I actually find the built in Windows msconfig utility easier to use than this. Start up Inspector successfully carries out what it’s supposed to do, however many other applications do this also, and have a much simpler user interface. I don’t find Start up Inspector very user friendly and wouldn’t considering recommending it to anyone. This application has become even more obsolete since Windows 8, as managing start up applications have been built directly into the Task Manager.
Start up Inspector does as expected, but it’s not very user friendly in comparison to other utilities. It seems like a wasted download. Overall, I’d rate it 2/5.
