Start Menu XP Editor's Review
With every new version of Windows, the “old” Start Menu seems to be fading away more and more. With the release of Windows XP, the Start Menu definitely saw some changes, as it brought out a new start menu with extra abilities. Up to Windows Vista, the option to switch back to the Classic Start Menu was always there, however Windows 7 removed this. For those who just can’t get to grips to the new style of Start Menu, Start Menu XP is there to restore that branching out of menus effect and bringing back some of the functionality of the older versions.
What Start Menu XP does is stops the All Programs menu from opening up inside the Start Menu. Instead, once you click the Programs button, Start Menu XP kicks in and displays your programs as menus branching out from one another, as seen in previous versions of Windows. I feel it does this quite well as the colours and the fonts seem to match up pretty well to the system theme and everything seems to work just fine. Application sub folders open as expected, and the experience as a whole is great.
Some thought has clearly hone into Start Menu XP though. As an alternative to just the classic branching out menus experience, Start Menu XP can automatically categorise your applications under different titles. Clicking a title would then open up the applications that relate to it, keeping your start menu less cluttered and more structured. A similar idea is used in the Gnome 2 Desktop for Linux. You may prefer to use this, as of course, Windows 7 is a later edition of Windows and constantly living in the past isn’t great.
Start Menu XP has worked very well for me. The only reason why I won’t be keeping it is because I have no major issues with the updated Start Menu layout. However, for people who cannot stand it or just aren’t ready for the switch, this piece of freeware should be ideal for you. Overall, I’d rate it 4/5.
Start Menu XP Publisher's Description
This program makes the list of programs "drop out" just like it did in Windows XP. This feature allows you to use all screen space and find the necessary programs faster. You can also organize programs in "virtual groups" (Office, Games, etc.) Since these groups are virtual, you won't see empty folders after uninstalling the programs. Groups can be "folded" (minimized) to make finding and launching your programs easier.
