Recuva Editor's Review
Losing files from your computer can be quite a worrying situation, especially if these files are those which are known to contain valuable content. There can be numerous reasons of file deletion, virus and malware, hard drive failure, seek errors are a few of them. Recovering a file or its part can be a daunting task at times. There are, however, file recovery software products which exist, that you can use for the successful restoration of files to your computer. We’d be taking an insight on Recuva and we’ll see how good it is at the task at what it is made to do.
Recuva is available in three versions: free, a paid one which costs $24.95, and another paid one which costs $34.95 with the difference being the support and the number of systems you can use the product on. It works on all major Windows versions including Windows 8. It weighs only 3.41MB and gets installed in a jiffy. The fact that it has Google Toolbar installation embedded in it is rather disappointing, but you can always choose not to install it.
The interface of the Recuva software product is quite user friendly. At first launch, it presents you with a Wizard which basically sets the options for the files you want to search. Thereafter you can begin the scanning or deep scanning, whatever you’ve opted for in that wizard. Other than that, it has a simple yet attractive explorer like interface which surprisingly is quite easy even at the first use.
One of the most exciting features of the Recuva software product is that it can retrieve lost files from any storage device attached to the computer. The retrieval process is one that is carried out within a time frame of five to ten minutes for devices of moderate storage size, but it takes time for Hard Disks. You can also bring about the recovery of files from disks that have been either formatted or damaged using the Recuva software product. If you have formatted your disk in a manner that it appears completely blank, the Recuva software will still be able to retrieve all the hidden files that are there in the disk. Deleted emails can be recovered with the help of Recuva software product. Recuva provides full email recovery support for Windows Live Mail, Microsoft Outlook Express and the Mozilla Thunderbird. Emails that have been deleted six to eight months ago can also be recovered using Recuva. The Recuva software product is characterized by what is known as a Quickstart Wizard. Such a wizard will embark upon the task of saving all files that are there on the computer instantly without waiting for the user of the computer to do so. File retrieval is also immediate when executing this wizard.
Lost iPod music can be recovered using Recuva. What is more, even the additional track date is recovered for a user by this software product. One will be able to retrieve as many as a hundred iPod tracks when one has this software uploaded in one’s computer. Recuva scans all files within a computer in a very quick and hassle free manner. This feature is known as the Deep Scan feature.
Recuva enables you are the user of this software to permanently erase all deleted files from the computer system so that these files can never again be retrieved with the help of any software product. Traces of the deleted files shall also be entirely removed so that the deletion of the files cannot be tracked. Recuva can be used by you in the Windows Operating System. Recuva makes use of a considerable amount of the system memory in order to perform its tasks. It works at a very high speed. Unfortunately quick access to a particular file is not granted to a user when using the Recuva software product. Also, you may not always get the deleted file in perfect condition, or in worst cases, you might not get it at all.
Positive Points:
- Free and comes with an easy to use interface.
- Recovery speeds are good and recently deleted files are usually found.
- Restores data even from the formatted devices.
Negative Points:
- Comes with Google Toolbar in its installer.
- Older files may not be recovered at all.
Conclusion:
Nowadays, most of the work is done online and with Cloud technology getting up; it is gradually shifting more towards it. However, recovering files from a local system still remains an important issue. There are plenty of applications available for restoration and recovery and Recuva doesn’t do any wonders. However it has been online for long enough and is tried and tested. Recuva performs well enough as far as personal use is concerned, but if you are looking for recovery on large scale, it might not suit your needs.
