Music Hero Editor's Review

Music hero is a rhythm / action game, with one of the more interesting premises, being a blend between a rhythm game a side scrolling shooter, and you must use the rhythm of the music to determine when to go up and down to avoid the oncoming threats. This makes is great for fans of either genre, as in theory you can beat the game with the sound off (albeit being a lot harder and requiring a lot of skill) and fans of the music or rhythm genre can be good enough to beat the game with rhythm skill without any experience or skill with side scrolling shooters.

The gameplay of music hero is interesting; you are in sound city and must defend yourself from alien spaceships which are trying to invade. Only you, the music hero can do this. Music will start playing as soon as the game begins, and enemies will start pouring in trom the right of the screen (in standard shooter fashion) as the music starts to kick up, and have a consistent beat, the movements you have to make to respond will correspond to the beats in the music, allowing paying attention to the music to help out as much as looking at the enemies.

In addition to basic rhythm being at the forefront, during later levels, during intense parts of the music you will go into solo mode. Solo mode will result in insane numbers of enemies coming onto the screen in a way which makes them unavoidable (without shooting them) however your spaceship will respond by glowing red, and will start firing missiles. These missiles will do massive damage, so as long as you can fire them in tune with the solo (often really fast) you can destroy all the enemies, and rack up a massive score.

The general difficulty progression of the game is pretty steep, but is excusable by the fact that you can replay earlier levels by going back and getting extra learning progress to help you with the levels. The music is very good, and actually makes this a fun experience, and as there is a fair amount of variance in the music (which unfortunately, for obvious reasons does not use “real music”) and the graphics stand up with the music, being toned down to some degree to ensure performance and responsiveness (which are ideal in a music game to keep the music in beat with what’s happening on screen)

Overall, music hero is a great game, with great music, responsive controls and reason to go back and play again. As far as gameplay, music, replayability and fun value are concerned, this game is excellent, and if those attributes are important to you, I recommend you give it a try. If graphics (which are toned down) are more important to you, or you do not have a sense of rhythm, or do not enjoy music this game will probably give you a hard time, and you should probably give it a miss.
