Mozilla Firefox Editor's Review
As the internet industry is moving forward, more and more browsing software are coming into picture. Time and again we see a new browser being released, be it for personal or professional use. One name that comes perhaps to everyone’s mind is Mozilla. Mozilla has been in the industry for quite a while now and has many products like Thunderbird, Persona, Webmaker, Firefox OS and Firefox. The application due to which Mozilla is in almost every internet user’s heart is Firefox. Firefox is one of the leading web browsers in the world. It was an unconquered king of browsers once, but now, with the inception of new browsing products, its market share is beginning to decline. Let’s see what’s in the Firefox package for everyone concerned.
Firefox is available for almost all major Operating Systems, including mobile OSs like Android. Getting it up and running isn’t a complicated task. You can download Firefox installer from their official website and continue with the setup process. Since there are no adware products attached, installation proceeds as cleanly as a whistle just as it happens for Chrome. It takes around a couple of minutes and just requires to be clicked next. Surprisingly, Firefox now allow users to choose the desired search provider. Also, a version with Bing as default search engine is also released.
Just like Chrome, Firefox too follows the minimalistic approach when it comes to interface. Firefox’s interface conveys the idea of ‘Sense in Simplicity’ and justifies it easily. Like MS Office and Opera, they too have removed the old menu bar and kept a single Orange colored Firefox button which lists all the options when clicked. Users can view the older menu buy pressing the ‘Alt’ key. Upon launch of a new tab or a window, welcome screen consists of grid of most visited pages, just like other browsers. Sadly, we can only remove the existing websites, but not add any; they are selected automatically by frequency of visits. This page can be turned off and reverted to original ‘plain white page’.
Pages can be bookmarked easily and quickly by simply clicking the star button present next to website’s address. Firefox may be the only browser to keep address bar and search box separate, but address bar can function as search box too. Also, as soon as a keyword is typed, it quickly scans all bookmarks and history to show the list of page(s) we might want to visit. A new feature which is introduced is that it allows you to ‘Switch to’ previously opened tab, even if you have entered address in new tab, which helps avoiding unnecessarily opened tabs.
The newest version makes Firefox more competitive socially too. Following what Rockmelt does, it has now options to display social feeds in toolbars and sidebars from various Social Networks using Social API. With built-in Twitter Search, users can stay updated about latest happenings and most hot topics at Twitter. Social API is not limited to Social Networking sites; it works seamlessly with almost every interactive site in web space.
Just like Chrome, Firefox too has managed to bring syncing on the fly to the browser. Almost everything is synced with the servers including settings, history and bookmarks. A key generated during sync setup is required to be entered to be used on all devices. Firefox’s syncing is not as quick and convenient as Chrome, but it works efficiently nonetheless.
Firefox has probably most wide variety of users and developers, due to which the addons available for Firefox is more than more for any other browsers. Firefox’s offers most number of extensions through which it can be customized up to any extent. Firefox offers theme feature too which allows it to be customized visually too. Apps are updated and hot-fixed automatically without any user intervention. Another handy visual modification to the Firefox is that tabs can be arranged in a grid and sorted as user wants by a single button and pin feature; a definite boon for the person who like to open a lot of tabs while browsing. Unlike Chrome, Firefox again disappoints when it comes to built-in utility tools like PDF reader, Flash Player and Instant Page Review.
As Firefox’s developer’s base is so strong, its help and support section follow. Many tools are available for almost all users. One of the unique products of Firefox is Firebug which allows web developers to analyze the code of their site and diagnose the problem or improving the code, which is highly beneficial for both learning and development purposes.
As far as performance is concerned, Firefox has struggled in the past with the startup times and its new version does no wonder. Although, startup time has dramatically improved as compared to its past versions, but is still behind Chrome and Firefox in launch speed tests. With the new JavaScript processing engine, JavaScript loading and processing speed has improved considerably taking it above both Chrome and IE. Firefox does pretty well with hardware and software media accelerating and stands on level with Chrome and IE and way ahead of Maxthon and Opera. According to various benchmarking tests, Firefox drops below Chrome, Internet Explorer and Maxthon in recognizing HTML 5 elements. A major improvement on this part is certainly expected in future versions. Firefox has now added partial support for GetUserMedia function which allows access to Microphone and Webcam without the use of any third party plugins. This option, however, needs to enabled via about:config page.
Firefox offers pretty good privacy and security features as well. Although Firefox has implemented various new technologies like Phishing Filter and Antivirus integration, it still lacks a good sandboxing technology. Private Browsing works as well as it works in any other browser, leaving no traces behind. Adding to the security is wide range of addons available at Firefox’s site. Overall, Firefox is a secure enough browser to tackle almost all security attacks.
Positive Points:
- Nice, Clean and Easy to Use minimalistic interface.
- Inclusion of Social API makes it more interactive and appealing to younger generation.
- Synchronization between devices works pretty well.
- Large number of addons and themes make it highly customizable.
- Better JavaScript processing engine and performance.
Negative Points:
- No built-in support for PDF Reader and Flash Player.
- No option to change the pages on startup according to our priority.
- HTML5 support is not as good as Chrome, IE and Maxthon.
Conclusion:
Firefox had been a market leader for quite long. Now, Chrome is definitely taking the fight to it, but with the newer version Firefox bounces back brightly. With many new features, clean and simple interface, Firefox is definitely better than Internet Explorer and Maxthon and gives a tough competition to Chrome. It is surely recommended for users who are using IE and Maxthon. Those using Chrome, give it a try, it’s worth it!
