Microsoft Expression Web Editor's Review
There is no shortage of options to design interactive and appealing websites nowadays. Gone are those days when designing a web site required tedious hours of manual coding, testing and debugging codes. There are several standalone tools, frameworks and apps that make designing a website a breeze even for someone not experienced in HTML or web programming languages. While professional web designers opt for Abode Dreamweaver, not everyone needs such a feature laden and expensive app. Web developers with moderate needs can opt for Microsoft’s Expression Web.
Expression Web runs on Windows XP and later versions of OSes. You will need a PC with minimum 1 GB RAM to run it and 2 GB or additional disk space can be required. Two Microsoft technology based programs- .NET Framework 4.0 and Silverlight 4.0 also need to be installed if you want to use Expression Web. The installer can be downloaded from Microsoft website and the installation wizard is easy to follow. You can buy either the Professional version or Ultimate version.
The app interface is intuitive and simple. The panels in Expression Web interface show files and documents used for a project, CSS elements, style sheet elements etc. You can choose to display or hide these panels. At any time, you can also restore default workspace layout. However, seasoned web developers may grudge about some features being kept hidden in sub menus. For instance, you have to search for frames through a section of submenus. While the app interface is not much complex, Expression Web may not be the apt app for beginners in sphere of web design. Especially, those who have not used any web design tool earlier may have issues with learning the app.
Even if you do not know CSS, using CSS templates can be easy. However, you will have a tough time customizing them. It is annoying that the app does not present CSS elements in a panel in graphic manner. Like Many other web design apps, Expression Web offers you both Code and Design views. You may also use the split view for achieving precision in site design. Users also get a site view which displays all contents and pages in the site in a graphical manner. It comes in handy for selecting specific section or page and editing content and elements quickly. The app offers 5 more views- Files View, Publishing View, Problems View, Shared Content View and Hyperlinks View. There is hardly any web design tool that offers so many views.
Expression Web also comes with several Report generating options to let web developers maintain and tweak websites for their needs. You can generate those reports quickly and identify problems areas and their source in a website. These are SEO Report, Compatibility Report, Accessibility Report, and CSS Report. While inclusion of so many reports is prudent, they do not yield clear, visual representation of data.
Expression Web has a tool named Super Preview. It lets you see the website or its pages made by you in many web browsers simultaneously. This is a handy feature as you get to see cross browser compatibility of the website and make changes afterwards.
Positive Points:
- Easy to use interface, moderate resource requirements.
- Superpreview is useful feature.
- Extensive Report generation and View options.
Negative Points:
- Pricey for what it has to offer.
- Reports may not be useful for all users.
- CSS element present is not very intuitive.
Conclusion:
Expression Web is a worthy contender for beginners in web design or moderate users who do not want a very costly or feature laden tool. The app is easy to use and learning curve is on lower side. Some features like Super Preview are quite handy. Reports and Views are also useful but those may not benefit all users equally. It is better if you buy and use the app after acquiring basic knowledge of web design.
