L.A. Noire Editor's Review
Gaming industry is growing rapidly and growing with it is the technology and the concept implemented in building a particular game. One thing which hasn’t change is if storyline of the game is excellent, the game will definitely do well in the market. Rockstar Games, a well-known name for many has created games with terrific stories, brilliant concept, superb graphics and thrilling sound effects. One of the latest games added to their portfolio is L.A. Noire. Let’s see how well it does as compared to some previous creations by Rockstar Games and other similar games.
L.A. Noire is a result of collaboration of Rockstar Games with Team Bondi. This game is fairly large in size and make sure you have at least around 15GBs of free space. It needs a high end PC with a powerful processor and a good graphic card. Installation, as seen in other Rockstar Games, can only be done if Social Club is installed previously. However, you have the option to install Social Club as it comes packed with the installation package. Installation takes some time, as you’d expect with a 15GB game, but does not annoy with too many popups during the installation.
Set in Los Angeles of 1947, the storyline of the game is much more realistic than any other Rockstar Games. You play as a young and ambitious war-returned hero, Cole Phelps, who is at first a Police Officer in the game. You get promoted as you solve cases; which in turn gets you more mind-boggling yet interesting cases to solve. The story of the game perfectly blends with how it is visualized. Los Angeles is depicted almost, if not exactly, the same as it would have been in late 1940s. In addition to the roads and township, the vehicles on those are pretty much similar to those available at that time. Coming back to its storyline, it resembles the acts of old time Hollywood. From beginning to end, you’d feel as if you are watching a movie with the control of lead actor in your hands. You work your way up the ladder of achievements and promotion as an officer in LAPD, first in homicide and then in vice. No doubt, LA Noire is an open-world game which can be considered as exactly opposite of GTA series, but it offers more than that. It has a deep and enthralling story accompanied with superb graphics and immersive gameplay. At times, one might get a feeling of boredom due to longevity of crimes, but solving crimes has never been easy and it certainly wasn’t in 1947, the time at which this game is based. Also, initial cases are actually quite easy and boring and game might not feel gripping enough until the halfway stage. Along with series of crimes, you have the option to solve street crimes by responding to the chatter on the radio in your police car. Most of the street crimes are short and involve gunfights and pursuit of a criminal, but are entertaining nonetheless. In between the cases, you are shown the flashbacks of the old memories of Cole Phelps which become part of the game in the later stages. The game sometimes takes you to older times than 1947 through newspapers often appearing as important clues which also intersect with the main story unfolding a larger picture in the later stories of the game.
LA Noire is an investigation game and it surely delivers on that. Apart from a telling story, most of the time, you as Cole Phelps, have to search and investigate the crime scenes. Not only investigation, progressive interrogation is required to break the criminal to either confess or reveal the truth. Interrogation is a standalone feature of the game that differ it largely from other games and bends the storyline and longevity of the case largely. Upon being answered, you have three options to accept the answer as: truth, doubt or a lie. If you select it as a truth which wasn’t, the accused or witness may give misleading answers leading the case in a different direction making it longer and more difficult to solve. A doubt may surprise you and the criminal and can be used if you suspect that the person is lying, but you do not have ample proof. Upon selecting the option as Lie, you have to support that by providing the contradictory proof noted down in your diary. You get experience points by interrogating well which in turn results in quicker promotions and special bonuses.
The game is well paced and strikes excellent balance between storyline and gameplay. Along with life-like interrogation and investigation, it has compelling action on offer too. Many cases end with an immersive gunfight accompanied with chase sequence, much of the action is offered by street crimes involving gunfights. Incredible graphics and sound effects increase the impressiveness of the game by quite a margin. Sometimes, facial expressions do not blend with the body postures and body movements or are not as good as they should be while interrogation often leading to misjudgment of the answers given by the witness. However, facial expressions during gameplay are almost perfectly natural and appear flawless. Apart from that, the game offers excellent graphics. The background score and sound effects included completely blend with the storyline, graphics and gameplay. You can also make the game easier by enabling the chimes sound effect which is played automatically when you are near a potential clue which may not be always relevant. The vocals and narration is fantastic and feels to be absolutely natural. The game fails to impress the way it does with its other aspects in controlling the lead actor Cole Phelps. Phelps often shows sudden movements and scratchy turns while in pursuit leading to rough handling. Taking cover and sprinting controls are not as good as they should be again proving to be nuisance in the game. Another real negative of the game is the interaction with colleagues and other objects in the environment. Often while coming out of the office or in a gunfight, your partner of an innocent man would just block your way rendering you to move freely for some time. This sometimes leads to an innocent man being shot down resulting in mission failure. These are minor technical bugs which should be fixed in the next update. Regardless to that, LA Noire has laid a solid foundation in using the MotionSense technology which might prove to be mighty beneficial for gaming industry in future.
Positive Points:
- Immersive storyline with exciting street crimes and clean gameplay.
- Los Angeles of 1940s perfectly matched with real like townships and vehicles.
- Excellent Graphics mixed with enthralling sound effects.
Negative Points:
- Body movements and facial expressions do not match at some occasions during interrogation.
- Controlling Cole Phelps can be awkward at times.
- Partners and civilians often hinder while moving around and in gunfights which is irritating.
Conclusion:
LA Noire is an innovation in the history of the gaming industry and can definitely be considered a bold yet decisive step. It brings in the use of MotionSense technology and certainly does well enough to impress some gamers, if not all. However the major feature of the game is not the technology it uses, but the unique yet brilliant concept and impressive story that it offers. No doubt, there are few technical bugs in the game and it tends to get a little boring at times, but for a stubborn gamer, it is a treat to play!
