Internet Explorer Editor's Review

There was once a time when the browser world was dominated by a single piece of software from Microsoft. Yes, we're talking about Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The internet has evolved and so have browsers. As a result, we have numerous other browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Apple's Safari giving competition to our good old IE. With a major percentage of internet users preferring Chrome or Firefox over IE, Microsoft faces a challenge to resolve its long standing issues and provide users the experience they desire.

Microsoft's browser development team has put in a herculean effort to salvage IE's reputation. They’ve taken a big step forward when it comes to the interface design, speed and also technology support like HTML 5.

Users must know that IE 9 only supports Windows Vista and Windows 7. The installation is clean and without progress bars. A reboot is required to complete the installation. Settings and bookmarks can be imported from other browsers including Opera and Firefox. One major down-side is that IE9 is not available to the aging operating systems like Windows XP. Windows XP still controls a good proportion of the desktop market share and it’s sad that Microsoft chooses to ignore this.

The most striking feature about IE 9 is the radical change in user interface design. Microsoft has gone the Chrome way and altered IE's design to a tab oriented approach where the focus on the content and not the browser. Unnecessary controls have been removed. Distraction during browsing is minimized as web pages occupy major space. IE 9 only includes important buttons like Home, Favorites and Tools.

On opening a new tab, you are presented with thumbnails of frequently visited pages. A bar shows you the frequency of visit. You can also resume your last browsing session and even re-open browser tabs closed during the current session. The latter is handy when you accidentally close a tab. It’s often a requirement to view multiple sites together, probably for comparison. IE 9 provides a Tear-Off Tab Tool wherein you can simply drag a tab out of the main window to open it in a separate window of its own. You can then use the Snap Tool to juxtapose them. Tabs can even be dragged directly onto the task bar to enable you to quickly launch the web site. However, the absence of free and high-quality browser extension is one area that Internet Explorer seriously needs to improve upon. Rival browsers have a complete eco-system due to the vast number of extensions and add-ons that cover every possible usage of a browser.

IE9 features a single box which combines the address bar and the search box. The one box eliminates the space occupied by the extra search field and also mimics Chrome’s approach towards search. Google’s Instant Feature is of course absent in IE9; however it’s a welcome change nevertheless.

IE followers can finally rejoice as IE9 finally provides an inbuilt download manager. The manager shows recently downloaded programs and also helps you track the progress of the current download. The SmartScreen Filter as previously discussed, alerts you when it detects security issues with your downloads.

As experienced internet users maybe aware, there are plenty of sites that track user browsing history. Under the pretence of ‘serving users better’, these sites capture users’ browsing behavior. IE 9 provides a Tracking Protection feature which blocks such tracking sites which save your online history. You can head over to the settings and choose which providers to block. There is also an auto mode wherein IE automatically detects providers to block depending on your internet usage.

Phishing sites are those sites that masquerade as trustworthy sites and thereby capture your passwords and important data. Internet Explorer’s SmartScreen Filter aims to filter such threats and protect your personal information.

IE has traditionally earned a bad name owing to its dismal performance over the years. However, now that graphics and pages are rendered by the GPU, there is drastic change in performance.

For dual core processors, IE 9 uses the 2nd core to pre-compile JavaScript and thus shines in JavaScript benchmarks. The graphics processor accelerates the rendering of text and graphics. Browser start and reboot time has taken a fall as well.

Positive Points:
   -  New, improved and appealing user interface.
   -  Nice security features.

Negative Points:
   -  There is no third party extension support to enhance its functionality.
   -  Not compatible with older versions of Windows.

Conclusion:
If you earlier discarded Internet Explorer on account of speed issues, it is time to try the new rejuvenated browser. The improvement in speed is fantastic and the changes in interface are much needed. New features like the one box and tracking protection add a new dimension to web browsing. However, support for third party extensions is still a major issue. Existing IE users, it is recommended that you upgrade immediately. Non IE users, give it a try.
