Internet Explorer 10 Editor's Review

Up to the late 1990s, the web browser used by the bulk of Windows users was invariably Internet Explorer while Netscape played the second fiddle. The scene was relatively identical post 2000 but emergence of Firefox and later Google Chrome changed the scenario. The new open source rivals incorporated features that caught fancy of users fast and their user base went on increasing drastically. Microsoft was a bit late in responding to the changes in the segment and the successors to ageing IE 6 did not stop erosion in the user base. With IE’s tenth iteration, Microsoft has made some under the hood changes and the new browser shows significant performance improvements as well.

With IE ‘s new version, the support for older Windows versions is dropped. Internet Explorer now runs on Windows 7 and later versions and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. If you are running an older version of the browser, the update will come in form of Windows update. System reboot is necessary to finish installation, a far cry from smooth background updating features of Chrome and Firefox.

Upon first launch, IE greets you with its welcome page. The privacy component for Do Not Track and SmartScreen Filter settings look the same. As far as looks are concerned, this version of IER does not look different from its predecessor. It now looks somewhat sleeker with menu toolbar hidden by default. Windows 8 users get two versions though- one for desktop, another for touch enabled systems.

Microsoft has taken a leaf out of Chrome and tried to offer more screen space to users in this release of IE. The controls are stacked in a row and the search and address boxes have been combined. The box can also be enlarged by dragging with mouse. You can invoke the menus and toolbars of IE, if the old look appeals to you more.

The new version of IE sports some tab enhancements. You can observe the changes when you drag tabs out and in. the selected tab has a brighter hue. You can keep tabs on a separate row from search box. The new tab page shows the recently visited websites. Like the predecessor, it features InPrivate browsing and reopens last browsing session. Another much needed addition is a spelling checker which is enabled by default.

The new combined search-address box offers enhanced privacy as you can activate or disable the search engine’s autosuggest feature.  There is nothing like Chrome’s amazing Instant feature. You can pick a search provider of your choice though. This version of IE still has some legacy features like Accelerators and Web slices. You get a nifty download manager and popup blocker too.

While the last few versions of IE were getting trimmer and sleeker, they could not catch up with rivals like Chrome and Firefox in sheer speed and performance. With this release, Microsoft has made good progress in these fronts. Internet Explorer now hogs fewer resources and runs a tad faster. It does lag behind rivals in HTML5 support though. IE fares worse in Mozilla’s Kraken test and both Firefox and Chrome beats it by a large margin. Same is the case with Google’s Octane test.

In this release of IE, Microsoft has ensured safety is not compromised. You get a separate menu for Safety, as it is. Several online benchmarks and tests reveal IE to be far more secured than most rivals. The browser offers good protection from phishing websites. Its Tracking Protection feature is also ideal for privacy conscious users.

Despite the numerous improvements and a sleek UI, IE falls a tad short of catching up with popular third party rivals. There is still no ‘paste and go’ feature and tab stacking is absent as well. It fares average in HTML5 standards compliance as well. IE offers limited syncing features compared to segment rivals. The lack of rapid release cycle can make it harder for it to keep pace with other browsers.

Positive Points:
•    Sleek UI, needs less resource.
•    Inbuilt spelling checker.
•    Top notch security options.
•    Tracking protection.

Negative Points:
•    Lags behind rivals in synthetic benchmarks.
•    Not on par with Chrome, Firefox.
•    No luck for older Windows users.

With tenth incarnation of IE, Microsoft has narrowed the gap with rivals but the changes have come a little too late. The much needed features like inbuilt spell checker and resuming last browsing session are welcome, but they have been available in rival browsers for a long time. IE does make some visible improvements in speed and stability but Chrome takes the lead in sheer speed. It fares average in HTML 5 compatibility. It is nowhere as competent as rivals in extension and add-on support. As Microsoft is yet to embrace a rapid release cycle for IE, there is possibility of the competition leapfrogging ahead.
