If you need to import data points from a database or simply from a text file or an excel spreadsheet, you can use Import Points to convert numeric tabular data into AutoCAD blocks or points. This program allows you to connect to your database (or excel or text file) through ODBC (a Windows component already installed in Windows 2000 – XP), define the correspondence between fields and coordinates, and also transfer fields to AutoCAD block\'s attributes. This program doesn\'t export points from dwg, for this you can use the AutoCAD\'s EATTEXT or ATTEXT command.

If you have a program that is outputting a data file with headers and blank lines, and if the exact order and location of those headers and blank lines varies from data set to data set, then it might be nice to read in a data file similar to how Excel does it. Each delimitted object, whether an ascii text object or an ascii numeric object, will get its own cell in a Matrix. I couldn't find how to do this simply, so I figured out how to do it with this little code. This is a quick way to sort out a file.

There are of course many ways to import data from an Excel file into Matlab. For instance, by clicking on an Excel file in the 'Current Folder' window within Matlab, one can select data and then push it into a variable in the base workspace. One can also use 'xlsread' to import data programmatically. Moreover, with the ExcelLink Toolbox, you can easily transfer data between Excel and Matlab in both direction, if you have this toolbox (which I don't). 'getxls' is just another possibility which, personally, I find often easier for quickly getting the data into Matlab.

Then it opens or creates existing excel file and saves data into specified sheetname.
