The Modular toolkit for Data Processing (MDP) is a Python data processing framework. From the user's perspective, MDP is a collection of supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms and other data processing units that can be combined into data processing sequences and more complex feed-forward network architectures. From the scientific developer's perspective, MDP is a modular framework, which can easily be expanded. The implementation of new algorithms is easy and intuitive. Locally Weighted Projection Regression (LWPR) is a fully incremental, online algorithm for non-linear function approximation in high dimensional spaces, capable of handling redundant and irrelevant input dimensions. At its core, it uses locally linear models, spanned by a small number of univariate regressions in selected directions in input space. A locally weighted variant of Partial Least Squares (PLS) is employed for doing the dimensionality reduction. Linear feedback shift registers (LFSR) are a simple method of generating sequences, including pseudorandom number sequences. The LFSR code provided is very unrestricted, allowing for any feedback polynomial, initial state or decimation factor. The code is written for a 32 bit LFSR, but minor alterations allow for 8-64 bit versions. A equivalent mex file is included, which runs approximately 100 times faster than the m file. Some of these LFSR sequences have special properties; a maximal length sequence (MLS or m-sequence) has a large autocorrelation at zero lag, with near zero autocorrelation elsewhere.

The non-linear regression problem (univariate or multivariate) is easily posed using a graphical user interface (GUI) that solves the problem using one of the following solvers: - nlinfit: only univariate problems. - lsqnonlin: can deal with multivariate problems (more than one dependent fitting variable, ydata is a matrix). - patternsearch: this solver is useful to obtain a good start point, before using nlinfit or lsqonolin; this way, the global minimum is determined easier. Data is introduced in the GUI as vector or matrix from the workspace.
