The Neural Assembly Simulation Environment (NASE) is a collection of routines written in the Interactive Data Language (IDL) by Research Systems Inc. It provides routines to simulate neural networks and to visualize those networks' behavior.

FreeMat is a free environment for rapid engineering and scientific prototyping and data processing. It is similar to commercial systems such as MATLAB from Mathworks, and IDL from Research Systems, but is Open Source. FreeMat is available under the GPL license. In addition to supporting many MATLAB functions and some IDL functionality, FreeMat features a codeless interface to external C, C++, and Fortran code, further parallel distributed algorithm development (via MPI), and has plotting and 3D visualization capabilities.

kpib.m contains code for GPIB and serial port communication for a number of scientific instruments, organized so that a single common command syntax can operate them all. For example, the command: r = kpib(INSTRUMENT,GPIB,'read'); will return the voltage and current reading from a number of different power supplies. The goal is to be able to write matlab code that can accommodate changing instruments and experimental setups with minimum hassle. If INSTRUMENT and GPIB are defined as constants at the beginning of your code, then they can be changed to accommodate new equipment, and the rest of the code is unchanged.
