F-Secure Antivirus Editor's Review
The importance of staying safe over the Internet is no longer a luxury feature for those who know how to take care of themselves, but an obvious necessity. Whenever they get a new computer or they reinstall their operating system, most people come up with an antivirus before installing anything else. Although it is relatively new on the market when compared to other major names, F-Secure has managed to gain a decent reputation due to its features, but also the interface. The costs float around $29.99, which means it is cheaper than many other similar applications. But are the features worth the money?
The installation is simple and concise. It takes a couple of minutes to both download the antivirus and install it, but it depends on your connection. You have to go through five different dialog windows in order to start the installation. Unless you plan to make any changes – such as deciding on the components to be installed or changing the installation folder, clicking next a few times will take you straight to the launching part.
The interface of F-Secure is one of the most intuitive ones in the industry. You get a huge green button, which ensures that your system is safe. Other than that, the three main buttons in the center of the screen direct you to the most usual functions – tasks, stats and status. Three smaller buttons allow you to scan directly, look after updates over the Internet or change the settings. All in all, most of these features float around the overall protection of the system. For example, the Deep Guard feature ensures a 24/7 protection against installing or running applications that might be malicious. In order to be updated to the latest changes or discoveries, users also benefit from a real-time protection.
F-Secure is quite simple and does not bring in any sophisticated features. You can scan your drives, but also the removable ones. One interesting option pauses the antivirus scan if you run a game or other full screen applications, only to prevent framing. Aside from the paid installation, users may also take advantage of free stuff over the Internet. It might have been a better idea to have all these extra tools implemented into the actual program.
As for the virus removal power, F-Secure allows you to choose between quick or full scans, but also independent drives, folders or files. As for the speed, it usually depends on your computer. According to tests, F-Secure scans around 23MB per second. It is far from the better known antiviruses, but still decent. Moreover, the virus database is refreshed about ten times per day for updates.
The impact of F-Secure over your computer is just as important. Unfortunately, it cannot brag with the best results. For example, it requires 42.6MB of the overall memory, but it also brings in about 15 more seconds to a rebooting time. If there is one thing the system exceeds in, that is the subsequent scan – almost 270MB per second.
According to AV Comparatives, F-Secure was awarded the product of 2010, since it ranked a lot better than other more popular names, but it has been a long time since then. Security products from other vendors have improved massively whereas F-Secure has stayed almost stagnant as far as improvement is concerned. However, the product is certified by AV Test, a world renowned program and testing center in Germany. On the other hand, the program is not approved by ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs. As for the customer service, it is very communicative and available round the clock. The in-line help is just as effective for the less experienced users, but the internal help files represent a total mess, since finding the right information is a pain.
Positive Points:
- Nicely priced with easy and quick installation.
- Intuitive and user-friendly interface.
- Decent scanning performance.
Negative Points:
- No value added features such as anti-phishing tools.
- Not as light as user would want on the system resources.
- Navigating and searching through internal files can be very difficult.
Conclusion:
F-Secure may not have any futuristic features or high-end technologies, but it has exactly what you need – a good effectiveness against viruses. Its performance may not be the best either, but the multitude of certifications does compensate with that. Overall, it is a good enough antivirus for basic and intermediate level security, but for people looking for complete security solution, it is definitely not a great choice.
