CyberLink PhotoDirector 5 Editor's Review
Digital photography enthusiasts usually stick to industry leading contenders like Adobe Lightroom or Aperture of Apple. However, in recent years a few capable contenders have emerged on the horizon. If you are looking for a feature packed yet affordably priced digital photo editing and management app for Windows or Mac, CyberLink PhotoDirector can be your choice. The company is known more for its award winning media playback suites and webcam apps but its foray into this segment is quite commendable. From ease of use to performance the app ticks almost all the boxes right. There are several new enhancements including Bracketed HDR, Split toning, improved noise reduction and Auto lens correction etc.
CyberLink PhotoDirector is available in two versions, namely- Ultra and Deluxe. It can be installed on PCs with Windows XP SP3 and later versions. The app is quite resource hungry with the company mentioning a PC with 3 GHz dual core CPU as the minimum requirement. The GPU also needs to be quite powerful to harness maximum performance from it. You will need oodles of RAM installed in the PC to make the most of its 64 bit support. It is a multilingual app. The app now supports displays with high resolution.
The app comes with a pretty sleek and functional UI. In fact, the clutter is less compared to what you get in UI of rivals like Corel PaintShop. PhotoDirector can work with TIFF and JPEG images along with a wide range of RAW file formats. This is bliss for DSLR users. The list of supported camera models found in Cyberlink website is pretty impressive.
As is the case with modern Prosumer level digital photo editors, PhotoDirector comes with some modes to facilitate workflow. It has 5 modes, namely- Print, Slideshow, Edit, Library and Adjustment. Switching between all these modes is quite simple. Based on the mode you select, the app displays apt options in its left side panel. The UI has a viewing area that can be customized to an extent.
If your system is equipped with right hardware components, PhotoDirector will run like dream. Flipping through pictures does not show signs of lag. PhotoDirector allows zooming to some preset sizes but lacks a full-range slider. Like rival apps, it supports keyboard shortcuts for the majority of operations.
As you connect a camera to the PC, PhotoDirector pops up photo import dialog. You can select which images within a folder should be imported. The nice thing is you can zoom images and begin editing even when importing is in progress. The speed of import is almost on par with Lightroom. PhotoDirector lacks support for tethered shooting.
You get all required organizational tools and features you can expect in a professional image editing and management app. The app comes with powerful Face tagging feature. It runs pretty fast for analyzing images in Library mode. At times, it can throw some false positives though. Once you assign name to an identified face, fining image of an individual at once is simple.
PhotoDirector does come with basic editing and image adjustment tools. You get controls for white balance, contrast and sharpness, for instance. There are much needed controls like red eye fix and Cropping. In fact, Cyberlink has added some advanced editing tools like levels and curves in the app. You also get 5 level controls for manipulating darkness or light areas in images. There are options to rectify camera lens caused distortions.
Those users looking for image enhancement filters will not be disappointed with PhotoDirector. The HDR effects in the app can fulfill such needs. The Body Shaper and content-aware object removal also save a lot of time while editing but they do not work like miracles. They come with wizard like process to aid beginners. Other notable effects included in the app are Sepia, Photo Composer, and B&W.
PhotoDirector comes with plenty of output options with two clear buttons for Flickr and Facebook. An initial sign in is required to use these features. However, one glaring omission is lack of email sharing. Genrating slideshows with images is another option and you can use 4K HD videos in it. You can export the slideshow to MPEG-4 video as well. While the app has a dedicated print mode with diverse paper sizes, grid settings there is no support for soft proofing.
The new noise reduction tool of PhotoDirector offers excellent performance. Like Lightroom and Aperture, the app can now stack images based on time and date. Stacks, once made appear in the app’s Library mode as thumbnails with a number displayed. In Lens Profile Correction, PhotoDirector loses the edge to Lightroom, owing to its modest database of lenses. However, you can still download more profiles from CyberLink's DirectorZone.
Positive Points:
• Sleek, functional UI.
• 64 bit support, overall fats performance.
• Several image enhancements, slideshow creation.
• Tools like Nose Reduction work well.
Negative Points:
• Not enough profiles for Lens Profile Correction.
• Quite resource hungry.
• Lacks tethering for import.
Conclusion:
CyberLink PhotoDirector emerges as a viable contender for serious digital photography enthusiasts though it may not be the best option for professional photographers. The app natively supports 64 bit OS so you can use more RAM to extract better performance. It offers some UI customizations and works with majorly of RAW image formats out of the box. The image editing tools work well and you get some advanced tools too. The Slideshow creation is a bonus and you can include 4K UHD videos too. While the app does many things right, it loses the race to contenders like Lightroom by a small margin. The latter scores better in import speed, wider lens correction- profiles and geo-tagging.

CyberLink PhotoDirector 5 Publisher's Description
CyberLink's entry into the space, PhotoDirector impressed me from the start. It's both quick and powerful, and dressed for success in a clear, pleasing interface. Version 5 does nothing to detract from this impression: To the contrary, new 64-bit operation makes it faster, and new tools like lens profile-based image correction, multi-shot HDR, and improved noise reduction make it more capable of getting your photos looking their best. And these come on top of advanced features the program already boasted, such as face-tagging, corrections for chromatic aberration and geometry, content-aware object removal, and even a body slimming tool!
