CrashPlan Editor's Review
Ever since the concept of cloud backup and storage emerged on IT industry horizon, nearly all big players and newcomers have hopped on the bandwagon. Apart from bigwigs like Apple, Google and Norton several new contenders have started offering cloud based data backup and restoration services to users. Some of these services are free while feature packed packages do cost a premium. In fact, picking the right plan and company from the available options can turn out to be tedious. CrashPlan stands out tall among the crowd of contenders by adding social element and offering both local backup and cloud backup. It is also among the most secured cloud backup services as of now.
CrashPlan will appeal to the advanced and network users because it offers unlimited online backup plans with support for network and external drives. The free plan offers local storage but the icing on cake is you can save data to connected storage and also in friend’s computers. The CrashPlan+ package with 10GB online storage can be tried for one month absolutely free. The installation goes without any hitch and you do not need to make an online account to use the service. It is compatible with Windows and Mac OS based computers.
CrashPlan's aesthetically designed and sleek interface makes things easier for beginners. The dashboard window shows trial period duration. You also get a number of destination choices and a start button. The left side tabs are tasks like Settings, Friends, Restore, Backup, History etc. Similar to rival backup apps, CrashPlan augments a system tray icon. The interface lacks a help section though. While the app is pretty user friendly, you need to head to the website for FAQ. The app does not integrate with Windows explorer.
CrashPlan selects folders for backup like My Documents, My photos etc by default. In the backup tab you can specify which folders and sub folders to include or discard. You can backup data from attached external drives but network drives are barred. The difference with other cloud backup apps becomes evident when you pick destinations for backup. You can opt for CrashPlan Central online storage, another PC, local hard drives etc. You can ask a friend to let you use his PC for backup host and the opposite is also possible. There are plenty of customizations available for backup.
If you are paranoid about safety of backed up data, CrashPlan will satisfy you. The company makes use of 448-bit Blowfish encryption, a terrific algorithm that will thwart intrusion attempts of most hackers. The downside is if you lose your own key CrashPlan can not recover those files. The online support is pretty decent and the company has social media presence as well.
CrashPlan keeps checking for changed files and folders and upon detection, initiates backup. You can adjust the percentage of CPU power consumption by the app when you are away. The data upload speed is pretty good. When most backup apps inform users about backup task completion via email, CrashPlan also includes updating by Twitter.
Any backup plan should be able to restore the files as and when user needs. In this respect, CrashPlan performs fairly well. It lets you restore a specific version of backed up data. The app’s Web interface lets you restore files to a PC from which data was uploaded. When you use the Web interface for restoration, you are given a ZIP archive with 24 hours validity.
CrashPlan lags behind other contenders when it comes to sharing backed up data. Unlike apps like SOS Online Backup it does not offer link based data sharing. It also lacks a mobile app version.
Positive Points:
- Backup from network and external drives.
- Affordable unlimited storage plans.
- Sleek interface, decent online help.
- Superior data encryption technology.
Negative Points:
- Data cannot be restored if you lose password.
- No offline help.
- No mobile app and link sharing.
Conclusion:
As a matter of fact, CrashPlan is a robust and versatile cloud backup app that will please even demanding users. You can opt for free storage if local backup is what you require. Its support for external and network drives will be useful for business users. The multiplatform capability and sleek interface makes it ideal for a wide range of users. Its excellent data encryption is praiseworthy but it can prove to be a double edged sword, if you are bad at remembering passwords! The big deterrents to its claim to fame are lack of offline help documentation and mobile apps.
