Corona SDK Editor's Review
Corona SDK is a free program that allows users to fulfil the commonly asked question of “how do I make an app”. Indeed, corona is a set of useful tools that greatly aid with app development, and allow you to make one app and publish it across android, iOS and blackberry OS in one easy, mostly free to use package. In addition to just programming the apps, corona allows you to preview it in any of the devices on your screen, and also comes with a variety of useful third party tools.
To get started with corona, you must first learn some basic LUA (which is the language used in corona for the most part, which is based on C) and use it to create basic objects, and have these objects interacted with by the touch screen. While learning LUA can be a fairly complex task, the basics are fairly simple, as it is a versatile programming language you should at least be able to grasp some of it.
Once you have the hang of LUA, or at least have some examples or tutorials to work with, you can take advantage of some of its more powerful tools. One of these is it’s preview mode which allows you to see how your program will perform live on devices, and edit it live as you do so. This device list is limited (roughly 5 android phones, namely the latest nexus model, galaxy model and offering from Sony, as well as an iPhone and a kindle are included) so will not allow you to do the later stage bug fixing, but allows you to see how your app works on various resolutions, and on varying powers of hardware.
As well as allowing you to see how you own apps work on a virtual device, this also allows you to use APK files (android app files) and simulate them using this. This means you can essentially emulate android if you want to play android games but do not own an android device.
Corona is not all positives however and there are some limits on the free version that make it a risky decision. The biggest of these is that you cannot publish to any platform besides android without one of the two paid versions (both costing many hundreds of dollars). As well as this, you cannot put in app purchases or micro transactions in your games, which are one of the better forms of app revenues. These are arguably fair, as they allow it to be free for people not looking to make major money, but can be considered unfair because of the proprietary nature of many of coronas tools.
Overall, corona is a great tool for people who want to make their own app, but do not already know a programming language. It has very good interfaces, has an easy to learn programming language and offers a whole suite of features from video game physics engines to android emulation, and is an excellent tool. If you want to give making android apps a shot because you have an amazing idea, definitely give it a shot.
