Often, measured data is comprised of N sampled values of z, evaluated at N locations (x,y). With this function, you can calculate the coefficients of the best-fit x,y polynomial using a linear least squares approximation. You can use this function if you have a set of N data triplets x,y,z, and you want to find a polynomial f(x,y) of a specific form (i.e. you know the terms you want to include (e.g. x^2, xy^3, constant, x^-3, etc.) in your fitting polynomial.

RANDWORD generates a random word from an alphabet. The words are selected from the lexicographically ordered list of all words of the given length using a random index generated with 'rand'. WORD = RANDWORD(alpha, wordSize) returns a random word in the alphabet 'alpha', with the number of symbols 'wordSize'. The result WORD has size 1 x wordSize. WORD = RANDWORD(alpha, wordSize, numWords) returns 'numWords' random words in the alphabet 'alpha', with the number of symbols 'wordSize'. The result WORD has size numWords x wordSize. Example: Generate 4 words of length 5 from the alphabet 'A', 'B', ..., 'Z' word = randword('A':'Z', 5, 4) word = VPQQT PFQPQ OHPYM XWAPM The method of randword is to select a random word from the lexicographically sorted list of all words on alpha of length wordSize. With n = length(alpha)...

FUNCTION VAR = STR2VAR(STR) Returns the variable or array of variables, VAR, matching the pattern STR. Matching variables must be of same type. a = 3; b = str2var('a'); % b is now equal to a, i.e. 3. a1 = 3; a2 = 2; b = str2var('a*'); % b is now an array with values [3, 2].

Suppose you wish to expose a FORTRAN or C function within Matlab without making the effort to write a MEX wrapper. (For instance, writing MEX wrappers for all BLAS/LAPACK routines would be a massive undertaking.) This package will work if: 1) The function is a void type, or the user doesn't care about the function return value. 2) The function arguments are all references to numeric arrays. Of course, not every function fits the criteria, but it might be easier to write a C wrapper for these tools than to write a MEX wrapper from the ground up. Extend these tools to suit your needs.
