This is a suite of functions that read images and metadata from Adobe Photoshop PSD files. These files can be used independently or in IMREAD and IMFINFO via IMFORMATS. Currently only the image pixels from the base layer are imported. Additional layers, paths, masks, and adjustments can be in the file but do not affect the image that is loaded. The metadata support is limited to basic details about the image (dimensions, bit depth, number of samples, etc.). These functions are based on the file format description for Photoshop 4, but they appear to work for Photoshop 7 files. I haven't tested on files generated by Photoshop CS. For more information about the PSD file format, see <http://www.csdn.net/Dev/Format/graphics/PSD.pdf>;.

DICOM is a rather complicated format. The DICOMINFO and DICOMREAD functions provide easy access to the data in DICOM-formatted files, but it can be difficult to know why and where the DICOM parser fails for improperly formatted files. This file must be placed in the toolbox/images/medformats directory. The DICOMDUMP utility presents a flat representation of the file with minimal data translation. For each attribute in the DICOM file it prints these values: * Byte offset in the file * Nesting depth (for sequences) * Attribute group and element number * Value representation (VR) code * Data length in bytes * Attribute name from the data dictionary * A description of the data Meta-information about the file and reading environment also appears: * filename * machine endian * presence of required 0002 metadata * information object UID...

DPX is a high dynamic range file format used for digital motion picture stills and synthetic imagery. The readdpx function extracts image metadata and returns image pixels for each frame. The DPX format contains numerous bit-depth, pixel layout, and colorspace combinations. This function currently only supports uncompressed 8-bit per sample grayscale and RGB packed images. This function shows how to use MATLAB's TYPECAST and SWAPBYTE functions to parse files, which is the subject of a January 2006 MATLAB Digest article: <link TBD>.

There are many ways to convert high dynamic range (HDR) images to low dynamic range (LDR) versions suitable for display. This tone renderer simulates the properties of a generic transparency (positive) film, such as Kodak's Ektachrome or Fuji's Velvia. Unlike tone mapping operators (such as TONEMAP) that attempt to map all of the tones to be in the visible range, this one makes many values very bright or very dark. The purpose of this function is to show an alternative tone mapping rubric.
