Standard GLCM textural analysis often doesn't give good results unless a large number of global classes are used (and using a large number of classes brings other problems). Using local classes helps, but the results are sensitive to noise. This program uses unweighted area sampling to vastly improve the result of both global and local GLCM textural analysis. Only in very simple situations can we describe the correlation between two time series as a single number. Often it varies both as a function of time, and of wavelength. Datasets may be uncorrelated on short timescales due to noise, but strongly correlated on larger wavelengths (eg annual). This program will compute (using wavelets) the correlation as a function of both time and wavelength. Anticorrelation (s=-1) is displayed in blue, zero correlation (s=0) in green, and positive correlation (s=+1) in red. The image shows the correlation between the oil price and the gold price, which is mostly red (implying strong positive correlation) except for a period between 1985 and 1995. Note that it is valid to compare datasets that have been measured in different units using this method.

This program allows you to display an image with a shiny appearance, without using a directional light source like the MATLAB Material command does. The results often look good when overlain on the original data in 3D using the Surf command.

3D displays of data can look very 'flat', which is why light sources are often added. A non-directional alternative is to make the colour of the surface represent a high pass filtered version of the data. Surfplot calculates the high pass filtering using fspecial, and so requires the Image Processing Toolbox.
