The NOAA polar orbiting satellites carry a variety of instruments that in an orbit that provides global coverage. In addition to the high-resolution AVHRR scanner, which can provide stunning false-colour images, the satellites also carry sounders, which operate in the infra-red and microwave bands. The infra-red sounder is called HIRS/3, and the two microwave sounders AMSU-A and AMSU-B respectively. These instruments provide much more spectral detail about a pixel, what its apparent temperature is in 40 different wavelengths, but at fewer pixels per scan than the AVHRR scanner. ATOVS thus allows analysis of the atmospheric state in the vertical profile as well as parallel to the ground.
The data formats supported by the ATOVS Reader include the data broadcast over the EUMETCast service, and L1B data from NOAA-15 or later...

- BUFR Viewer
- License: Freeware
- Price: 0.00

The BUFR Viewer is a new program which is still under development. At the moment, it can read the scatterometer data from Metop-A and ERS2 satellites, the 100km and 25km QuikSat data, the SatWinds data from AQUA and TERRA, and the AMV (air-motion vector) data from EUMETSAT. All this data is available over the EUMETCast dissemination system. It can also read data from the EUMETSAT Archive facility (UMARF) which is available off-line, and includes Meteosat-2 and Meteosat-7 data.
If there is sufficient interest, the program may be developed to allow other data to be visualised. Here is a sample of the ERS2 scatterometer product visualised by the BUFR Viewer, overlaid on a user-image background, and with country boundaries drawn in. You can zoom in to clarify data in a particular region.

The CMA Viewer is a Windows program to visualise the CMA (China Meteorological Administration) data sent over EUMETCast. This service is now operational.
What data does the view display?
As the program is still in development, the range of data is still expanding, but at the moment the program can display the following data types sent over EUMETCast:
* CLT - Cloud Type Analysis
* CTA - Cloud Total Amount
* HPF - Relative humidity?
* OLR - Outgoing Long-wave Radiation
* PRE - Precipitation Estimate
* TBB - Black-Body temperature
* TPW - Total Precipitable Water-Vapour
There is no need to decompress the data from the Z-zipped format used for transmission.
The program has command-line facilities to process on or more files and produce image...

Find Duplicates was written to allow you to control your disk space usage by discovering files that are duplicated and, should you so wish, deleting one or more of these duplicates. There are many ways in which duplicate files can be deposited on your hard disk, for example programs which don't check to see if you have a particular DLL installed and install their own private copy in any case, or other programs that install a DLL in your Windows folder when it is already in WindowsSystem32. You can also use Find Duplicates to see if any files on a floppy are already present anywhere on your hard disk. For safety, Find Duplicates moves files to the recycle bin before you delete them.V5.1.4: Add right-click popup menu (adds new Open Container item, duplicates existing Properties menu), add more thorough checksum option ('Better check')....

GeoSatSignal is a development of my SatSignal program, designed to process geostationary satellite data. Because the data is a sequence of images from the same well-defined location, more exciting processing can be done, and GeoSatSignal allows you to combine data in a number of ways:
* from multiple channels to produce a false-colour image, including channel differences
* from multiple segments of a single satellite view (such as those transmitted by GOES & MTSAT)
* from multiple satellites to produce a world view
* from multiple times to produce an animation
* correct data to standard map projections
* display satellite images on top of meteorological charts

Program to display GINI format images received over the NOAAPORT system, and convert them to BMP format for subsequent import to other software (such as Digital Atmosphere Workstation). The program will run with full function for 30 days after download, but if you wish to use it after the trial period you will have to register the software, for which there is a small charge.
GINIview has been tested as a Digital Atmosphere extension, via its scripting mode, and there are free sample scripts here => Projects, DA Scripts.

What data does it read?
DWDSAT GRIB data available from the EUMETCast system (as used for Meteosat-8/9 reception). Most data is free, however you still need to register with DWD. Some DWDSAT data is a separately PAID-for service from DWD.

- Metop LSA Viewer
- License: Shareware
- Price: 38.70

The Metop LSA Viewer is a program for use with the Metop data sent over EUMETCast from the EUMETSAT Land Surface Analysis, Satellite Application Facility (LSA-SAF) expert group.
At the beginning of April 2009, EUMETSAT introduced new LSA-SAF products from Metop on EUMETCast. The Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Down-welling Surface Long Wave Flux (DSLF) based on Metop are now disseminated in 3 minute strips covering the European region only. This provides data with a much higher resolution than can be achieved from geostationary satellites, albeit at the expense of fewer passes per day.

Metop-A is the first in a series of three polar-orbiting satellites carrying a high resolution imager (the AVHRR like those on NOAA-15, 16, 17 and 18) providing "morning" weather satellite coverage of locations all over the world. Uniquely, Metop can download all its data from a single pass when it is in within radio reach of the polar ground station (at Svalbard), and this world-wide continuous data stream is broadcast over EUMETCast to users throughout Europe. Unlike other high-resolution satellites, you do not need a tracking antenna to get data from Metop, nor are you restricted to data from your local region. These characteristics make for challenges handling Metop data, but for great rewards exploring the world as well!

Manage Metop global AVHRR files broadcast over EUMETCast. Program capabilities:...

The MSG Data Manager is a Windows program that will process the files received from MSG-1. These files might be received over the Internet in the future, but today they are easily received with a Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) card installed in your PC, and a standard domestic satellite antenna, LNB, and cable. A description of my own system is here. The data manager will automatically process the files into images, and optionally delete the large amounts of source data that would otherwise accumulate. The program allows you to choose which of the twelve channels you process to images, and also allows you to keep some raw data in the processing PC should you wish.
Please note that the MSG Data Manager and MSG Animator are original pieces of software developed independently by SatSignal Software, Edinburgh specifically for users...

- NTP Plotter
- License: Freeware
- Price: 0.00

During the tests on a Windows version of the NMEA/PPS ref-clock drivers, the need arose for a simple program to plot the performance. As a result, development of the NTP Plotter program was started to produce graphs of offset, frequency error, and jitter like those below, from the loopstats files which ntpd can produce. The jitter graph includes an extra averaged value, presented on a more detailed scale, so that even small changes can be observed, such as the change from user-mode to kernel-mode time-stamping in the bottom graph.
Note that, because NTP holds the current loopstats file open, NTP Plotter may not be able to show today's data. The solution to this is to copy the loopstats files to a temporary directory, and point the NTP Plotter at that directory.

If you have an R2FX, R2ZX, R139 or RX2 receiver, you may have wanted to control it from your computer so that important passes were collected, and not ruined by other satellites capturing the receiver. My PassControl program allows this scheduling, and being RS232-based, it works under Windows XP, 2000, NT etc. as well as Windows 98 and ME.
This program has been fully updated for the new GEO PIC 1.0 and for Kepler data for NOAA-18 & NOAA-19.

This program is designed to predict the tracks of satellites both as paths above the earth, and as images produced by these satellites when scanning the ground. It was designed for use during the early stages of my weather satellite receiving activities, when clouds and interference prevented easy identification of what I was actually observing! Read more about using WXtrack. The core orbit prediction elements are also available as a component that you can use in your own software. This program is free for amateur use, but if you do wish to say &thank you&, or you want technical support, you should register WXtrack. WXtrack can read processed satellite images from one or more folders of your choice, and present these images side-by-side with the ground track prediction. To make visual correlation easier, minute markers are produced...
