"Amy Foster" is a short story by Joseph Conrad.
In this story, "Yanko Goorall", a Polish immigrant en route for America is shipwrecked on the shores of Kent, England. Speaking no English, he is treated as a madman and is whipped, stoned, beaten and imprisoned by the locals. Eventually he is given a job by a Mr. Swaffer, learns to speak English, and falls in love with Amy Foster, an English girl who had shown him kindness.
This classic shortish story relates author’s self-thought alienation from British society, as a young foreign man survives a shipwreck off the coast of Kent, England only to be shunned by most of the townsfolk. The one exception is the loving, if dull-witted, Miss Foster.
The book is believed to reflect Conrad's own social alienation in English society.
In 1997, "Amy Foster" was made into the film, Swept...

Mary Baker Eddy (July 16, 1821 – December 3, 1910) was the founder of the Christian Science religion.
She and others credit her with the ability to heal instantaneously.
Married three times, she took the name Mary Baker Glover from her first marriage. She was also known from her third marriage as Mary Baker Glover Eddy or Mary Baker G. Eddy.
In 1903 Mark Twain published a book illustrating Eddy and her church entitled Christian Science. Twain wrote
“ In several ways she is the most interesting woman that ever lived and the most extraordinary. The same may be said of her career, and the same may be said of its chief result.
It is thirteen hundred years since the world has produced anyone who could reach up to Mrs. Eddy's waistbelt.”

Mark Twain, considered America’s greatest writer, was far more than a humorist. After the Civil War, he served as America’s conscience on ethnic and racial issues. Twain defended Jews, African-Americans and Indians against prejudice.
Twain seems to have had a change of heart about Jews around the time of the Civil War. He confided to his daughter Suzy that "the Jews seemed to him a race to be much respected . . . they had suffered much, and had been greatly persecuted.
An American Jewish lawyer asked Twain "why, in your judgment, the Jews have been, and are even now, in these days of supposed intelligence, the butt of baseless, vicious animosities?" The lawyer asked, "Can American Jews do anything to correct either in America or abroad? Will it ever come to an end?
In response, Twain penned "Concerning the Jews," which...
