Arkanix Editor's Review

Arkanix is another entry into the arcanoid or "brick breaker" genre, and instead of just going down the route of being a generic clone of the original game, arkanix decides to take it a step further. Instead of simply breaking the bricks, and winning by breaking ever brick on screen, in arcanix there are a variety of game types, all of which mix it up from the regular game mode of "break the bricks" to add challenge and fun to game the game.

The first and most noticeable game type is the brick protector game mode. In this mode there is one brick on every stage that must be protected at all costs, and the goal is to destroy every other brick on the stage without destroying this one brick. As you can imagine, this is both very fun and very difficult to do, and as you progress through the levels the bricks are placed closer and close together to make it harder and harder to destroy just the correct bricks.

The second game type is very similar to regular arcanoid, but to keep things being stale there is a multiplier applied to your score for every brick your ball breaks without hitting your paddle (or the ground). This means grouping bricks together for massive combos is the name of the game, as the objective of the mode is to get as many points in the games fifteen levels (all of which are fairly easy when score is ignored) as possible.

The art style of the game is fairly unique for an arcanoid style game, which fits the style of the gameplay perfectly, because it feels like an entirely new game that just borrows a little bit of the controls from arcanoid. My two biggest problems with the game, however were firstly its very short length, which means if you don't want to replay a game just to get a higher score there is just 10-20 minutes of entertainment to be had from the game. As well as this, the game plays really loud, bad music which can not be muted, so if you're a fan of silent or quiet games this is probably not for you.

Overall though, arkanix is a great twist on the genre. If you feel like you've played too many brick breaker games and want to mix things up by playing one that is actually good, this game would be a great choice. If however, you feel that arkanoid is great in its current (but copied to death) form, then probably not worth a download, since the unique game modes and solid controls are just about all the game has to offer
