Apple Aperture Editor's Review

It is quite true that Macintosh users generally get fewer tools to pick from than Windows users but they have some solid and impressive software to work with. One such example is Apple’s professional image editing and organizing tool, Aperture. Available exclusively at Apple App Store, it locks horns with Adobe Lightroom. With Aperture you can organize all images you have in a centralized image library, execute basic editing, perform RAW conversion and share them using various means- smoothly. It is also compatible with other image editors including Photoshop.

Aperture costs less than its arch rival Lightroom but you cannot run it in trial mode. The latest version is compatible with OS X Lion and later editions. It supports Macs with retina displays.

The UI of Aperture is sleek and unobtrusive. In the new version, users get an option to import iPhoto library. The apps now use one library so the changes done in one app gets reflected in the other when you use the library. This saves a lot of time. The app UI is not modal like Lightroom and so you need not switch from one mode to another while making adjustments to images and organizing them. It offers some flexibility to display specific types of images in library but Lightroom offers snappier search filters. Those who rely on keyboard shortcuts extensively for computing tasks will be happy with this software. You can even use the shortcuts used for iPhoto with it.

You can think of the Aperture library as a centralized database of all images in the Mac. The original images are not altered and instead it saves the altered versions. Aperture lets you import images in the library in two ways. You can copy images into its library directly. You may also use the ‘reference’ method where you have to keep images in original folders so that the app can locate them properly when required.

During image import, you can add metadata to them for better organization. By default the app stores all images in ‘projects’. These are primary containers in the app and you can generate albums inside or outside projects manually. A single photo may be put within many albums but in one project at a time. Aperture can create smart albums as well using search criteria like camera model, date etc. You can use its virtual folders to organize the projects and albums better.

Aperture can be set to import images automatically when a camera is connected to the Mac. Before the import is completed, you cannot view images in full size in some cases. Just like Lightroom, you can perform minor editing on images when the import is in progress. However, Apple is yet to deploy an import progress bar in the app. Like many pro level image editor and organizer app, Aperture supports tethering. It now supports lot of DSLR models from stables of Nikon, Canon and Sony.

Aperture syncs with Apple's iCloud smoothly and so all synced images appear in the Apple devices you use. While the app supports video import, its editing capabilities are just barebones compared to those of Lightroom.

It is quite likely that your DSLR or smart phone images will need light to moderate levels of editing. Aperture is not very powerful image-manipulation software as such but it would suffice such needs in most cases. The Adjustments panel has tools for enhancing image quality. The dynamic range adjustment, image straightening, curve correction work really well. Applying color modifications and tonal change is simple. Aperture has the ability to work with external image editors. While you get most of the enhancement and editing tools pro photographers require in the app, there is no History panel. You have to use multiple undos.

In Aperture, you will find a feature called stacking that is useful to keep related images together. If you edit an image with an external editor, Aperture will store it along with the original version. Stacking images manually is also simple.

While Aperture has brush noise reduction feature like Lightroom, the latter produces much better results. The same thing is true about removing Chromatic Aberration from images. Aperture also lags behind Lightroom in dealing with highlight and shadow adjustments to an extent. It is hard to brighten up dimly lit images and bring out details without losing image quality in Aperture. Those who do not like manual tinkering with plenty of settings to improve image quality can resort to the app’s Auto Enhance feature. However, you get better results when you blend other auto correction tools in Aperture in combination.

When you work with images with human faces, Aperture chooses Skin Tone as white balance mode. This does lend a lifelike hue and quality to the images. The app does not feature lens geometry correction another area where rivals take the lead.

Any pro level image organizer and editor are likely to come with extensive sharing and output options. Aperture ticks almost all boxes right in this context. You can print images using various presets, share them online and create slideshows. There are 14 great templates to create slideshows within the app. Slideshow timing can be fine-tuned, per image and using music at background is also possible.

Print options are aplenty as well. You can pick from extensive range of its soft proofing profiles and customize image spacing row and column wise in pages.

Positive Points:
•    Sleek, intuitive UI.
•    Support for Retina Display.
•    Extensive Image sharing options.
•    Decent image editing and organizing options.

Negative Points:
•    Shadows and Highlight adjustments average.
•    No lens geometry correction.
•    No History Panel.

Conclusion:
Aperture has a minimal and sleek UI within which a plethora of features and tools are present. It is priced reasonably and supports Macs with Retina Displays. It excels in image organizing and sharing. The non-destructive editing is ideal for people who need to work with lots of images. If you use some other iOS devices, the integration with iCloud will be of great help. The editing toolset, while not as exhaustive as those of Lightroom or Photoshop elements gets most jobs done. Lightroom leaps ahead in keys certain sections like image noise reduction, chromatic aberration and geometry correction. However, Aperture will win favor with users who prefer organization and sharing more than sheer editing needs.

Apple Aperture Publisher's Description

Aperture and iPhoto. All your photos. All in one place.
For the first time ever, photos from Aperture and iPhoto come together in one unified library.1 You can open the library from either app and make adjustments to your photos. There’s no need to import, export or reprocess photos from one app to the other — just open your library and go. Faces, Places, Albums and Smart Albums work across both apps too. You can use Aperture to make professional edits, then go back to iPhoto to create a calendar or cards. It’s the library that’s sometimes pro, sometimes not, and always convenient.

Find your best shots. Fast.
Aperture gets straight to work on import. It uses camera-generated previews more efficiently, so you don’t have to wait to see your shots. You can browse your photos and choose the ones you want straightaway. While files are importing, Aperture grabs data like shutter speed, aperture, lens and focus points, and starts sorting your photos. It can also add keywords, apply adjustment effects and back up your original images to a second drive automatically. Aperture can then store photos in the unified library, in their original folders or on an external drive. And it automatically adds photos to your Photo Stream in iCloud.

Free download from Shareware Connection - Aperture gives you all the tools you need to uncover the hidden potential in your photos. It brings you even more advanced ways to organise, browse and perfect images. So you can make every shot your best shot.
